John Schwarz
Transitioning the Family Farm/Estate Planning
John was raised on a family farm
near Stroh, Indiana
where he was instilled with family values and a strong work ethic. He graduated
from Prairie
Heights High School
and later obtained an engineering degree from
Tri-State University. After working
in the automotive industry for a few years, he obtained his law degree from the
Indiana University School of Law, graduating in the top 30% of his class.
During law school, John interned at the Indiana Farm Bureau headquarters in
Indianapolis, where he assisted with developing favorable policies
and laws for Indiana farmers. Upon completion of his
legal studies, John returned to his home community to practice law. In addition
to being a practicing attorney, John is also actively involved in his family's
1700 acre grain farming operation.

John was born in 1948 and raised on a six-generation farm in east-central Illinois. He graduated with honor from
Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology with a BS in Chemical Engineering and a
minor in economics in 1970. The next five years were spent as a nuclear
engineering officer aboard the USS SEAHORSE, a fast attack submarine homeported
in Charleston SC. During this time he married Jan Sonneveldt from Grand Rapids,
Michigan. They have two sons, Aaron, a mining engineer who returned to the farm
in 2008; and Jack, a project manager for US Cellular in Chicago. He returned to
the 600 A. family farm in 1975. The
farm now comprises 2100 A. in Edgar County. At various times, he has sold
computers and software to farmers, worked in a mortgage banking operation as a
closing officer, and taught at the Danville Area Community College. His
community activities include Lions Club, FmHA County Committee, Ag Extension
Council, Republican Precinct Committeeman, and CPR Instructor. John is past
president of the Edgar County Farm Bureau, past member of the Illinois
Commission on Atomic Energy, a former Director for Illini FS, President of the
Edgar County Board of Health, and served on the Illinois Corn Marketing Board
and National Corn Congress. John is a 1988 graduate of the Illinois Agricultural
Leadership Program. He is active in
the United Methodist Church, serving as a certified lay speaker and choir
director. John writes humor and
commentary, appearing regularly in Farm Journal and Top Producer
magazines as a Contributing Editor. His work has also been published in Farm
& Country in Canada, Produktion in Denmark and The American
Enterprise. In 1995, 1996, 1997, 2002 and 2004 his works were selected for
Best Humor; in 1995, 2000, and 2003 Best Regular Column; in 2003 Best Editorial
Opinion by the American Agricultural Editors Association. In 2004 he was named
Writer of the Year. He also appeared regularly on Weekend Marketplace as
a commentator. In 2005, he assumed the position of host of
US Farm Report, the nation’s longest-running TV show. Also in 2005 he began
“Incoming” – a unique weblog for those who farm and those who like farms. In conjunction with writing, John speaks often to
farm and business groups.

Dr. Kerry Peterson

Dr. Melissa Justice, DVM, is an area field veterinarian for the Indiana State
Board of Animal Health. Dr. Justice oversees Region Six, which includes much of
East-Central Indiana. Dr. Justice also serves as the swine division director for
the Board of Animal Health. A graduate of the Purdue University School of
Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Justice spent seven years in emergency medicine in
Anderson, Ind. before joining the BOAH staff in October 2007. She has also
served part-time at a mixed-animal practice.

Dr. Justice resides in Matthews,
Ind. with her husband Shawn and two children. Dr. Kerry E. Peterson, DVM is the
director of animal health programs for the Indiana State Board of Animal Health.
She attended the University of South Carolina as a Biology/Chemistry major and
went on to receive her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 2006 from Purdue
University College of Veterinary Medicine. As the Director of Animal Health
Programs, she coordinates the many, varied aspects of the agency’s work in the
field with the activities within the central office. She is responsible for
streamlining work flow, report submission and data verification for all the
large animal species. She also currently oversees the 840 RFID Pilot Program.
Dr. Peterson and her husband, Mike, own a Standardbred racing stable. Her
husband is also a Standardbred trainer and driver at racetracks in Indiana,
Illinois, and Ohio.

Patty Reding

Farm Marketing"
Patty Reding and her husband, Gary, have been partners in the
family farming operation, Langeland Farms, Inc., in
Greensburg,
Ind., since she returned to the farm, leaving her position 17 years ago as a new student advisor
and public relations coordinator for one of
Purdue
University’s Statewide College of Technology program sites.Now she uses her
marketing skills to promote the benefits of local food and to do direct farm
marketing of their own home-raised natural beef. Reding is also a market master
with the local Farmers’ Market – a busy job that puts her in contact with a
multitude of products, people and personalities. One of her questions is, “When
was the last time you remember the burger you ate because it tasted that
good?”

Claire Whalen is an Oldenburg Franciscan Sister who currently
leads the Laughery Valley Growers, Inc., a multifarm agricultural cooperative.
She coordinates the co-op’s direct marketing ventures – FarmFreshCSA (Community
Supported Agriculture) and a new Thursday night farm market partnering with
Walhill Farm in Batesville,
Ind.In 1993 she joined her Congregation’s efforts to revitalize its family farm,
Michaela Farm. Since 2004 she has reached out to involve area growers to use
sustainable methods of production and promoted locally grown food. Whalen and
Patty Reding of Langeland Farms, Inc. are team leaders for the Food and Growers
Assoc. of the Laughery
Valley, seeking to promote markets for local food.

SHOW FEATURES
Electrical Safety Demonstration
Kyle Finley of Live Line Demo, Inc. interacts with Farm World Expo visitors
during his demonstration on how to work around live power lines. He will present
4 shows daily on farm and household electrical safety.
Kiddie Tractor Pull:
Ron Dietrich of Greenville, OH, invites youth from across the Midwest to compete for title of champion in the Farm World Expo's Kiddie Tractor Pull on
Wed., Sept. 10th. We will have (3) pull sessions-one at 10am, one at 1pm and
the last at 4pm. Classes will be for ages 3&4, 5&6, 7&8 and 9&10-The first
show will begin at 10 a.m., with registration kicking off at 9 a.m. There is no
charge to compete and prizes will be presented to winners!
Horsemanship Clinics
Born and raised as Arizona ranchers, Bill and Linda Black, of Cross Nine Ranch
in Spiceland, Ind. will interact with horse enthusiasts during their
presentation on equine handling and horsemanship during featured clinics at the
Farm World Expo. As well-respected, professional horse trainers, Bill and Linda
raise and train registered Quarter and Paint horses with an emphasis on
performance. Together, they have produced numerous champions and money earners
in cutting, working cow horse, reining, roping, western pleasure, western
riding, trail and halter. Bill has trained NCHA limited aged event finalists and
conducted reining and colt demonstrations for Texas A&M University as well as
Therapeutic Riding of Tucson, Hoosier Horse Fair, Equine Affair, and Summer and
Winter Roundups. Linda earned the 2008 Open High Point Championship Indiana
Ranch Horse Association award this past year. Don't miss Bill and Linda's
horsemanship clinics Thursday, September 9 (morning and afternoon sessions),
Friday, September 10 (morning, afternoon and early evening session) and Saturday,
September 11 (morning and afternoon sessions)
